Iran Intelligence Alert! political conspiracy, rogue activists, or spies?
Revised March 28, 2010
This page documents some alarming and unethical behavior by a dangerous rogue political party and criminal operation. Please read the information posted here carefully and do your own research. This document is being updated regularly as our investigation continues. Please check the comments section and document revision date for the latest updates.
We need your input and help. Our lives have been threatened, our credibility attacked, and it seems this group has some powerful friends in the media. We hope that by sharing our experiences, we can prevent other people from being harmed. This is not political propaganda. This is a real story about real people who have been damaged.
Public Investigation of Reza Pahlavi, Iran Cyber Army, and the monarchist alliance with MKO terrorist organization.
Other key suspects include: Mehdi Saharkhiz (onlymehdi on Twitter), Austin Heap (Austinheap on twitter),
Maryam Rajavi maryam-Rajavi, Melody Moezzi (melodymoezzi, Lily Mazahery (lilymazahery), twitter user Tehranweekly, twitter user Oxfordgirl, Josh Shahryar (jshahryar on twitter), & twitter character Persiankiwi.
This is a public intelligence brief and investigation called: Operation Blacklist. These briefs are compiled because The struggle for freedom, democracy & human rights in Iran is a very serious and dangerous situation for those inside and outside Iran. We must do everything to keep people safe and to provide accurate and timely intelligence.
Introduction
We feel there is a serious problem with a political party or government moles/spies on twitter using the hash tags #iranelection and #sog. It involves the false twitter profile of Persian Kiwi; a well known tweeter during the Iran election crisis. It also involves a group called anonymous and a website called: whyweprotest.net. This online problem may be about a hidden political agenda; or it may be an operation to track protestors and undermine the green movement inside Iran.
The operation apparently is using virtualization, proxy servers, and paying people to tweet.
The suspect group of people, automated twitter bots, & fake twitter profiles (sock puppets) retweet public news and spread disinformation. They call themselves "Sea of Green" and claim they are an online movement supporting the protestors in Iran. They play mind games, create false characters, and covertly attack certain people/websites involved with the green movement and democratic struggle. They collect donations for false or outdated causes and they try to drive traffic to certain sites such as WhyWeProtest.net & DailyNiteOwl.com.
The people of iran want the dictatorship to be replaced with a democratic system that has proper checks and balances. Shunned by most Iranians as fundamentally undemocratic, we feel strongly Reza Pahlavi and the Mojahedin-e Khalq are not a viable alternative to the current government in Iran. There is also the possibility that the money funding their operation is coming from western intelligence agencies such as MI6. From what we understand, the monarchists and MKO have reached a power sharing agreement. Reza Pahlavi wants to be Shah of Iran, while maryam Rajavi is supposed to be the President. FYI:People describe MKO as being no different than Joseph Stalin or the Khmer Rouge. MKO is a Marxist/Islamic fundamentalist group with cult like behavior. They are a terrorist organization that has murdered many innocent civilians.
The operation seems to be well organized and involves over 100 twitter profiles. We believe that whoever is funding this project, is damaging the green movement & the fight for democracy in Iran.
The information on this page is based upon our opinions and experiences. Your research, input and feedback will help us discover the truth. Please use the ad comments feature to contribute your content,. In addition, please vote and tell us if you think we should keep this list and why/why not.

It started with josh Shahryar
Josh Shahryar aka Niteowl aka @Iran_Translator was the publisher of a collection of compiled tweets which he called Green Brief. He constantly asked for information about protests and other resistance activities. He also seems to have very good sources about events on the ground in Iran. According to his tweets, he advocates slow change through reform and opposes any type of violence. From other tweets, it appears he supports anarchy and claims he does not like any type of government. According to a Google search, here is his bio:

Bio
I'm an Afghan journalist living in self-exile in the United States.
This blog is semi-professional for the moment and how professional it is is going to depend on your feedback and whether I like it. I'm an atheist and I believe in democracy, free enterprise with some government regulation and rights for all. In other words, you could call me somewhat of a libertarian. I am not affiliated with any political parties within Afghanistan or abroad. I'm, however, a strong proponent of globalization.
Finally, if you have any questions about Afghanistan, terrorism, Taliban, leaving Islam or the War on Terror, please feel free to contact me. I'll help you as best as I can no strings attached. My email address is dbosca@gmail.com"
He updated this info on December 3, 2009. before he disappeared, he claimed he was not Iranian and that he was from Israel. Then he started claiming he was a journalist from Afghanistan. Now he claims is first language is persian.
The danger is not in the collection of public tweets Josh Shahryar compiles and calls news; rather the information people are sending to him from Iran and outside Iran. According to a tweet by a user called Zolqarnain: Strange things happened in Iran after he began publishing his briefs. Many people who had been in chat rooms and were known to have had communications with his publication started disappearing off the internet. Some say he is a young adult living in Sacramento; other say he is a journalist in Afghanistan.
We believe this person is very dangerous. Based on our personal experience with him, we feel strongly he is either a criminal or a political operative. After we started tweeting that we suspected he was a spy; he stopped publishing the green brief and disappeared. He reappeared just before the 13 Aban protest. He blamed his disappearance on depression.
http://dailyniteowl.com is his website.
We sent Josh Shahryar some personal information which he did not use properly. In our opinion, his behavior is very strange and unprofessional.
We had sent him a story by email about our work in Iran. We told him about how one of the founders of this organization had to escape from Iran. We also told him the founder was blind. We explained that we had videos & pictures to prove our story.
Instead of trying to gather evidence about what we had told him, he started attacking our group as a sham. Then, after somebody spoke to him by Skype, he deleted the statements. However, his followers, bots, and sock puppets did not stop attacking us. Strangely, he blames the bots & sock puppets on Sanguinarious, a member of anonymous and moderator of whyweprotest.net. One example of these characters is Rage4iran. Twitter id: http://twitter.com/rage4iran
At one point, Shahryar claimed that he had called a truce and that all of these people attacking our organization act independently. He also claims he retracted his statement about us being a "complete and utter sham"; which he never has. All he did was delete the comment from his timeline. Later on, he blamed Sanguinarious for the attacks from bots and sock puppets. Sanguinarious is his website administrator for the website DailyNiteowl.com. Sanguinarious also runs WhyWeProtest.net. Apparently this site was originally created to fight the church of Scientology.
Austinheap is a person living in San Francisco. He claims that he is a hacker. From what we understand, he has a marketing degree. Austin Heap says he is creating an untraceable network which will bypass all filtering in Iran. But, in order to do this; he has been asking for donations and USB thumb drives. Not one person has come forward to say the network actually functions in Iran. He also claims that he must distribute these thumb drives to the people who will use this untraceable network. So, anybody who wants to use this untraceable network must plug in his thumb drive to gain access. Further his project is illegal according to everything we understand about US law. He has to get special permission from the state department in order to export the type of encryption software described. Further, many people can easily bypass filters in Iran without plugging in a thumb drive and have no need for such a network which could be compromised; if it hasn't already. There are several options for how to do this which goes beyond the scope of this page.
Austinheap got press coverage in the BBC, new York Times, and a couple other papers for making lists of proxy servers available during the election crisis. He seems to be very good at working the media. I have tried many times to communicate with him and ask him why he attacked our organization. He never responds. Then we offered him $1,000 if he could prove to us his network functions in Iran. He still would not respond. We had somebody else try speaking with him: and Austin heap told that person that we had "called him a fag & a murderer", which again was very strange.
We feel strongly he is not being honest about his activities. Example: Austinheap personally confirmed tanks were rolling in the streets of Tehran, then he deleted the statement from his twitter account. In summary, his behavior is very shady. Further he associates himself with people like tehranweekly who does nothing but spread disinformation and retweets news. According to tehranweekly, we are under house arrest by the FBI, we are IR agents tracking IP addresses, and we use keystroke loggers on the hash tag iranelection. And that is just the beginning.
Here is Ten Reasons why we think Austin Heap is a scam:
http://iran115.org/austinheap-haystack-scam
Austinheap is connected to Josh Shahryar, Sanguinarious, and many others on this blacklist. Sanguinarious says haystack works in Iran and that anonymous helped test the system in Iran. We started suspecting Austin Heap when he began a disinformation war against our organization on or about August 15, 2009, with the following tweets:
"http://iran115.org and @iran115 is COMPLETE and UTTER sham. Evidence will be provided tonite #iranelection (via @iran_translator"
http://topsy.com/tb/iran115.org/
Here is another tweet from @austinheap: "Some reading about the iran115.org scam: http://is.gd/2sqmm -- be safe online people.3:31 PM Aug 21st from Tweetie"
http://twitter.com/austinheap/status/3459966210
Austinheap's website:
http://haystacknetwork.com
Here is a discussion about Austinheap and filtering in Iran.
http://iran.whyweprotest.net/keeping-your-anonymity-iran/7484-haystack-n...
We believe these people are extremely dangerous. We also believe haystack network started by Austinheap is a very questionable project. It seems the group anonymous and the website iran.whyweprotest.net are also involved. Many of these people on the blacklist were put on the list because they seem to be sock puppets or part of the same group. Several of them are asking for donations for false purposes. They tweet misinformation and false news. They repost outdated videos and information. They also create multiple twitter accounts. They attack people and twist words and logic to fit their agenda. Some of them appear to be very trustworthy people. They all use the hash tags SOG & #iranelection on twitter.
We ask: who has the motive? Who has the means? Based upon our own experiences & initial investigation: we believe it is Reza Pahlavi, the MKO, or an alliance between these two groups. Both groups have the logistical capabilities of pulling off this type of operation.
This is one of the most cruel, dishonest, and unethical political groups we have ever witnessed. It seems they are also quite effective. They raise money for austin heap/hay stack network, organize endless petitions, retweet public news about Iran, play strange mind games, hold Friday prayers, organize sing alongs, talk about love, and attack people if they disagree with them or if they don't like their politics. They also make threatening phone calls. Most of them are not even Iranian.
This online political operation is taking advantage of people who want to belong to a cause and they seem to be very good at manipulating. They make up false stories, they spread disinformation, and they use proxy/VPNs to hide duplicate accounts on twitter.
Is this a group of hackers? Is it agents working to Destabilize Iran? Is it a political party that is trying to discredit our work? Because obviously they could care less about democracy. If you read our manifesto and constitution; you will find that our only focus is achieving freedom, democracy, & human rights in Iran.
Here is a website dedicated to attacking iran115 from anonymous & whyweprotest.net: http://iran.whyweprotest.net/keeping-your-anonymity-iran/33356-questions...
There are several theories about who these people are. None are good. At best, it is a pirate group & crime ring focused on making money. At worse, they are paid agents of a very unethical political group.
Possible theories:
1. They are a crime ring of hackers, pirates and college students. See links: Iran Activists Get Assist from ‘Anonymous,’ Pirate Bay | Danger Room | Wired.com
http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2009/06/iran-activists-get-assist-from-a...
Anonymous Iran: Pirate Bay and 'Anonymous' Back Iran Activists | NowPublic News Coverage
http://www.nowpublic.com/culture/anonymous-iran-pirate-bay-and-anonymous...
Somebody speculated that there was an alliance between anonymous and a foreign group
and money was being exchanged behind the scenes.
2. They are paid agents for a political faction who is trying to discredit our organization. If this is the case, their behavior has been very undemocratic and dishonest.
The following is a list of users who we think are suspect and who should be watch very closely. We ask you to please be very careful when dealing with these individuals. Keep in mind: some on this list may just be followers guilty of retweeting what they thought were reliable sources.
If you think you should not be on this list or would like to discuss the blacklist: please call our US bureau. PHONE: 202-509-0933 or contact us using the form at http://iran115.org/contact
Note: These users are starting to change their names on twitter. But you can still find them with a search when you search for contacts. We believe the top twenty are part of the leadership.

67.177.177.82 <--u banned but i have well over 300 proxies u ignorant fucker looooooooooool stupid arab
Please help to spread the word about this page on twitter and facebook. We encourage comments. Abusive and duplicate posts will be deleted. We have plenty from duplicate IPs already. I have left some in the comments section to give you an idea of this groups hatred and unethical behavior.
Reza Pahlavi does not work with mko or maryam rajavi that video u posted was propaganda..and why doesnt maryam rajavi have the cnn logo next to her in video?..only in reza pahlavi, totally propaganda..get a real life u arab fucker -Homeland Security
we told u before, homeland security was watching your operations and we were imformed by a reliable source on #iranelection that u were indeed a arab basiji..which your ip address is in iran and not washington dc[we are smarter than u]consider this as "a foot in your mouth" you are not welcomed on twitter..and twitter officials are watching you closely by the way..i am also using a proxy..just like everyone on social medias do have a nice day -Homeland Security
This is how Reza Pahlavi and Maryam Rajavi operate. Telling people to "put a gun to your head" This is who wants to replace the regime in Iran? Well. Insulting my dignity and honor work, because at least I think of such things.
They keep suggesting I kill myself. That I am worn out. That I am a poor old miserable blind man. LOL. They don't even know how old I am.
I am feeling extremely angry and depressed. Their taunting and hatred indeed makes a man consider many things. Just read the comments below.
\I will stay strong. And we will destroy the fascist dictatorship in Iran. Most importantly, we will make sure that Iran has a democratic system with proper checks and balances.
Apparently this group now has create a third false account called demo_iran_115. Now all three accounts that were created by them have been suspended.
iran115__
jamshidazadi
demo_iran_115
None of them were us. All three were suspended and twitter has not even checked my ticket yet.
What is going on?
Stay tuned.
Update on iran115__.
It is not suspended.
But demo_iran_115 is suspended.
I could have sworn iran115__ had been suspended. But it is back.
Thank you for all of your hard work. You are doing a fine job.
Andrew
Here is some information about the Pahlavi and MKO alliance.
A youtube video and some links to give you a little more info on Reza Pahlavi. Video might be propaganda, Found it on youtube.
This should also sheds some light on Reza Pahlavi's behavior. Read this article about Reza Pahlavi & MKO
http://www.ghandchi.com/231-RPandMKO.htm
http://www.ghandchi.com/337-MonarchyMKOEng.htm
The Official site of His Imperial evilness . Reza Pahlavi
http://gholamrezapahlavi.org
Now here is his other site. Whare its "not about him"
http://rezapahlavi.org
Is there a disconnect here or am I missing something?
Reza Pahlavi You are not only finished. You are an idiot.
we all know what youare up against.
They use autofollow bots. real twitter users who matter know you are doing a good job.
There spam fails. look up their score on klout.com which tells you how important twitter users are. there scores are bad. Yours was great until the account was suspended. Sorry that happened.
We will write to twitter on your behalf.
Somebody has created a satire of our account. I suspect the very Sea of Green.
JamshidAzadi was playing the roll of a silly baffoon that was out of his mind and "in his mother's basement" acording to the bio. A "Forest Gump" type character. Although I dont see what they got against good old Forest. Seems like he got a lot done.
Then came along another one called iran115__ who apparently is a little more serious.
I would encourage anybody who believes in our message to continue spreading the word about this strange political group. But please understand we must tell the truth. These people lie, create fake profiles, hack computer systems, play games inside games, manipulate, and threaten people.
This is a very serious situation. Real people are being hurt. I know. Because I am one of them.
Please understand, this is not the green movement in Iran. I dont think this is the government of Iran either. I think this is a very twisted and mean group of people who have political aspirations for Iran. It appears it is an alliance between Reza Pahlavi and the MKO/Maryam Rajavi.
Why do I think this?
Who has the motives? Who has the means? I follow the money.
It very well could be intelligence agencies helping the regime in Iran but I kind of think somebody would have put a stop to that.
But then how about getting suspended from twitter?
It may have been of my own doing. I did not do it on purpose. But, they may have jumped on the fact that I sent three messages to three people asking them to follow me. Although I did not think that it was a problem, seeing how an automated bot called whozits keeps sending everybody messages like: "here is todays news headlines" and it is the same message to multiple people.
Very interesting. I have not yet created any accounts because I understand that makes twitter upset. I am hoping to get this account back. We had over 3,300 followers.
I have invested a lot of time and effort in twitter. I hope we get this account back. Further, I have no idea why they suspended the account. The only reason I can think of is I sent three tweets to three people asking them to follow me. This was the last thing I did before getting suspended. Wanted to dm jshahryar oxcfordgirl and tehranweekly and I asked them to follow me. It seems this is what suspended the account. Dont know if it was automated or not. But... I'll just pray it works out.
"I have invested a lot of time and effort in twitter."
.... yah, spreading lies and disinformation about honourable users.
You've been doing so for over six months, proving again and again and again that you can not be trusted to tell the truth about anything.
I don't care the slightest bit if you really work for the Iran regime or simply are as stupid and crazy as a shithouse rat, as long as you go on with this shit you will have a constant follower in me. And don't mind me telling others about your scam and crap from time to time.
Oh my, oh me!
"Sorry, 93.206.157.12 has been banned."
Crap, now I have to press a button so my ISP will assign me a new IP-Address! *click* done.
LOLOLOL!
"Sorry, 93.206.191.238 has been banned."
The horror! Now I can't read my mostest favourite webspage in the whole wide world anymore or make intelligent comments!
What to do? What to do?
Oh deary deary me!
To the webmaster: I'd offer you professional help in dealing with your webpage administration, but to be honest: Why should I? The page is much more fun the way it is!
Oh - and of course I also won't work just for *anyone* - I have some personal pride too!
PS: You suck donkeyballs! LOL!
1. Austin Heap is not Iranian and admits he was not even involved with Iran before this recent election crisis.
2. Austin Heap admits to working with a certain "group". His work is not human rights, it is political activism. We believe he is working with a known terrorist organization called the MKO. The MKO apparently has created an alliance with Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former Shah. Whoever this group is, Austin Heap has alluded to them on his blog.
3. Austin Heap says you need a USB thumb drive to use his program to bypass filtering in Iran. We think this is a flawed concept and is very dangerous. It could potentially allow everybody's movements to be tracked. It would also be difficult to implement.
4. Austin Heap was asking for donations and USB thumb drives back in July before he was even registered properly. He claims that he now is a registered 501c3. He most certainly put the cart before the horse. His original PayPal account was also suspended.
5. Austin heap's haystack project is illegal. It is against the law until certain changes are made to the export rules involving Iran.
6. Austin Heap makes up false stories. At one point he confirmed personally tanks were rolling in the streets of Tehran.. He accuses our organization of being a sham without even trying to do any research.
7. The only thing Austin Heap has really accomplished was to distribute a list of proxy servers. He is also very good at milking the media for all it was worth.
8. Austin heap's behavior towards Iranians fight for democracy in Iran has been unethical. His friends were telling people not to contribute to our work, but rather to donate money to Austin Heap. He also began calling us a sham based upon rumors and never bothered to call us or to do further research. Example: twitter.com/rage4iran
9. Austin Heap was offered $1,000 if he could prove to us that Haystack works in Iran. He has never responded to the offer.
10. Austin Heap associates with very dark people like a character called Tehranweekly on twitter and somebody called Sanguinarious from a website called whyweprotest.net. A group that apparently was first created to fight the church of scientology. They created a sub forum on their site called:
iran.whyweprotest.net which according to certain news stories is also sponsored in part by Pirate Bay. And no... I am not joking.

Greetings Mr. JamASS,
I have heard the good news and I would like to congratulate you on your suspension. The hard working men and woman at twitter has finally done something to benefit the #IranElection community. I am also sending them a thank you letter and encouraging everyone else to do the same.
Might I ask, what are you going to do now since you got suspended from everything? I guess attacking everyone in sight without any evidence or proof has definitely been working out so far. My real name has been in the About page with my picture for months LOL. Seriously you fail.
You should come on skype so we can talk again, I miss our talks. :(
God Bless Twitter,
Alclaire Lenez
Dear Sanguinarious,
Thank you for caring enough to write. We appreciate your concern.
We are going to ask volunteers to continue warning people about the blacklist members as well as insure that google and other search engines are able to find us more easily. We have not done much SEO with this site yet. Further, we are seriously considering going ahead with our plans to take additional steps.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Jamshid
Hi there, fucktard!
"We appreciate your concern."
That was pretty much all you had to say to questions or suggestions back to last summer, when people still were suspecting that this whole mess you call a website and it's content might just be one uninformed person's little mistake.
Times you actually listened to suggestions or really answered questions: Zero.
"We have not done much SEO with this site yet."
You have done NOTHING with this site yet. Since you first appeared in #iranelection pretty much the own section of the page you ever "worked" on is the blacklist. Which means you added more empty threats, slander and conspiracy nonsense to it.
The whole rest of the page (you know - those parts that, if you really meant it, would actually be important) is lying dormant since I had a look at it for the first time over six months ago. So much for your preferences... :D
"Further, we are seriously considering going ahead with our plans to take additional steps."
Plans to take additional steps? Really? Let me guess - you'll say things like "Never post that link again, or else..." and do nothing apart from that, like you did to me and others on twitter several times in the past months...
Maaaaan, you're such a *sad* figure! I bet your parents are proud of you (bruahahahahaa!)
Welll.
Sad news.
We were suspended from twitter just now. And i am very frustrated. I just sent an email to twitter.
Hello. My name is Jamshid. I have been involved in the fight for democracy in Iran since 2001. I was attacked on twitter by a group calling me pedophile, scam, regime agent, and many other things. They threaten my life, make calls in middle of the night, and have tried to destroy our work.
They use paid tweeters, sock puppets, & virtualization to create massive amounts of multiple accounts.
I have tried to defend my honor and my groups work by responding and exposing what we think they are all about.
We believe they are working on behalf of a political party and they are doing very nasty things behind the seams.
Please see:
http://iran115.org/blacklist
My account: iran115 was suspended today. I don’t know why.
I did send requests to three people to follow me so I could direct message them.
If this was considered duplicating info, I apologize.
Let me assure you this group does far worse things.
Please reinstate my account.
My number is 202-509-0933.
My name is Jamshid.

Sigh.
Everything happens for a reason.
Almost every comment below and on the voting page: http://iran115.org/list from the public are from the same ip addresses. There are about 7 IP addresses that keep showing up on most comments. All of them are from google apps or two data centers. One data center is in Russia and the other is in Amsterdam. Two other IP addresses that keep poppping up are two private dsl users from Mountain View California and Indiana. Both have been reported to their network providers for making threatening comments. Sanguinarious is using a server from Tranquil Hosting in North Carolina. Is also using google apps. Sanguinarious is the web master for dailyniteowl.com, whyweprotest.net and another Iran activist site that can be found if you check the ip address for their server.
I wrote a blog about a very similar topic in the summer. You are welcome to read it at:#Iranelection in retrospect – mass political movement or beauty contest?

Hey - I noted that your blacklist isn't really up-to-date! My position on it should be re-adjusted to the fact I'm now a "super-moderator" on wwp! That should gain me at least 10 or 20 places!
Considering a few trained professionals have done a diagnosis on you, the answer is a definite YES. Have you checked out that shadow that is always following you around?
Considering your stuck on twitter and twitter has no real meaning in the world, your safe from potential harm to others. Anyone thinking of sending you any money will look over your site and declare you a fraud, so even that is safe.
You seem to somehow think YOUR the answer. In your own little pathetic mind you are, good thing is, Iran is isolated and the world has no need for it, other than a supply of oil to Europe and China. Iran wanting nukes is the same as a little boy screaming with a glock in it's hands. Your screams are only in your head, no one cares how hard to throw a temper tantrum. I want to be the first to tell you to your face, YES, you are a complete failure in life. And you will die that way, a pathetic failure. No one even cares what happens to you let alone your 'cause' :) YOU DID IT TO YOURSELF YOU FAILURE!
You neither help nor hurt anyone, so your fine, I just wish I could pat you on your bald little pointy head, then kick your teeth down your throat.
people have been telling that clown this stuff for months now. :)
Nevertheless - I'm curious how long this comment will stay online, for a while now iran115 has been removing all comments newer than his "ppl vanish after 15 minutes of fame" post...

Your quite the paranoid blind little blind bastard aren't you? Only thing you talk about on Twitter (which is the only place you advertise) is YOU, Your web site and the people who see you from the Scam you really are.
There is coming the day, when you will be no more. And one last thought for you, you do realise no one pays you any attention now. You Turned out to be a failure.
... if some investigative reporter actually had a look at iran115 and it's claims... :D
I think that is what he wants.
*he* wants investigative reporters uncover the truth behind his crackpot theory.
*we* want *him* to be checked out - I doubt he'd like *that*... lol
Wow. I get to be on the list twice. This is an honor. Seriously, how in the world are you helping the fight for freedom in Iran with your blacklist? It doesn't make sense to me. I know almost everyone on that list and they are not hackers, they are not what you claim they are. It's just silly. I have you blocked on Twitter but I just had to come over and see what all the fuss was about. Blech not much going on here really. Pretty pedestrian from my perspective.
Keep on keeping on cause that's what you do best.

Most of these people I don't know, but some I do, and I have no reason to suspect them. That's the problem with blacklists. I worry about the sex vids/entrapment sites, what I call Arguses--named after a greek monster
who had many eyes, also a name for a variety of peacock. These are lists of tweeter with no content.
I saw that DougGrossCNN on twitter had sent a tweet to Austin Heap about wanting to do a story about twitter and Iran. I sent Doug Gross a message saying I would love to also talk to him about his story. He asked me to email me some thoughts and he would mention my website in his story. He never mentioned our website, and he mentioned a very dangerous and untrusted source on twitter. The untrusted source he mentioned in his story was Tehranweekly.
Here is the conversation.

"Hello,
I have been involved in the struggle for democracy over six years. I just recently escaped from Iran after traveling through the country for almost 2 years.
We have tried to develop grass roots bottom-up democratic institutions across Iran.
I would love to chat with you further. I would like to tell my personal story and the story of people inside Iran. Have also been using twitter and have some interesting stories about it.
I am blind. Lost my sight when I was young because of cancer.
I love Iran and have been trying to make a difference for years.
I am a wrestler. I wrestled with revolutionary guard generals. I have videos to prove some of my work in Iran I also have video of me sky diving and wrestling.
I have been acknowledge by the senate and congress for work here in the United States related to developing jobs for _____.

"Thank you so much for touching base with me.
I'd love to include mention of your site in the article. Would you be able to respond to this note with some quick thoughts on the kinds of activity you're seeing online now -- and how it is the same or different from the activity shortly after the election?
Would it be OK to use your full name in the story?
Thanks so much,
Doug Gross/CNN"
That was the first conversation. Now here is my response to his first message.
"Hello-
I would love to go public with my real name if it were a story about my work and our organization. But, for the purposes of this story about the internet, please kindly refer to me as Jamshid or iran115. My twitter id is "iran115" Feel free to say it is an alias. I am a member of an organization called Democratic nation of Iran.
We are an organic movement with secretive cells who have developed independently throughout the country. We fight for the political ideology of democracy. We want freedom, justice, & human rights. Our three areas of focus: social, political, & military. We want a better life for people in Iran.
Online activism definitely influences events on the ground. It is very exciting. It also has some problems.
In fact, I see it as being one way to organize a new government and a type of command & Control for the fight against the regime.
It is away to solve the problem of leadership. Give people the tools to organize themselves in every community.
Problem is the speed and access to internet are very well controlled inside Iran. We have to figure out how to bring direct satellite access to the internet and bypass government filtering.
However, many are able to use proxy servers & VPNs inside the country.
The obvious & immediate impact comes from the videos,.
Another basic example of online activism influencing events: when Michael Ledeen and a few others put out a story about Khamanei being sick, it was all over Iran in about 2 days. Rumor was that Supreme Leader was dead.
Twitter is a mixed blessing. It has harmed people just as much as it as helped.
Just after the election, we used it to engage in psychological warfare against the regime.
It was really interesting. I saw people using twitter to report news; and I was trying to think how I could make the biggest difference from where I was sitting in Washington DC. I decided it was to get the regime to spend money.
I also was getting reports from inside Iran that said facebook & twitter were being used to track down protestors.
Back then, we had only a few followers.
Now, we have over 2,000 followers and we use it to spread the message about democracy, human rights, planning, and ideas about how to defeat the regime.
I think our efforts to spend the regimes money on twitter was working. We got a tweet from Islamic Republic of Iran broadcasting that said:
"propaganda is for wartime"
We started tweeting against @khamanei_ir And he deleted his twitter account.
We also think there are paid agents and communist groups using twitter.
In my opinion, youtube seems to be the real weapon.
It really has made the biggest difference.
Facebook second.
Twitter is important but it is also dangerous.
For example,
Here is a little something from the darker side of the web. I would like to tell you more on the phone, because it is rather disturbing. It is an ongoing problem I ran across when I started using twitter.
http://iran115.org/blacklist
My number is 202-509-0933.

"
next message I sent him:
Just to give you a flavor for the world of twitter.
Some person on twitter claims that the tweeters on my blacklist are pretending to be Mousavi fans but they actually are regime agents.
Twitter id: made_in_iran
This made_in_iran Claims they are with MKO or friendly with MKO.
Wanted to tell me MKO has nothing to do with blacklist.
If you read my timeline and @iran115. You wwill find some quite interesting exchanges.
I would be really curious to see if you could investigate this further or what your thoughts are.
Action is certainly on twitter. Many of the people I have on that list are ghosts. I feel strongly something very dangerous is going on.
Jamshid
Then he published his story. Here is that actual story:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/12/30/iran.social.media/index.html
And boy was I upset. Mostly about tehranweekly and not being mentioned in the story/twitter feeds. So I sent him this email:
"Why did you do that?
Do you have any idea who tehranweekly is and what they do on twitter?
I thought you were also going to mention us in the article?
Could you at least call me so I can tell you our side of this situation?
Jamshid
202-509-0933"
He did not respond to me. And that is when I decided to call him. On the telephone: he said that a reporter had given him Tehranweekly & Austin Heap's name as trusted sources. He said that he had our info in the file and "he would be doing stories in the future about Iran"
So I thanked him and then sent him this email:
"Sorry. Sometimes this gets a little personal.
Thank you for taking my call.
Just one more thing.
Check out how many followers we have. The United Nations also follows us. Or last time I checked. And we have had no media coverage.
Please consider adding us to the list of twitter feeds in the article.
Iran115
And our manifesto.
http://iran115.org/manifesto
We are Iranians working hard to make a difference.
Thank you."
After a couple of weeks: I called him again trying to find out what reporter had given him Tehranweekly's name as a trusted source on twitter. That is when he hung up on me and said "he did not have time"
So I sent him this final email:
"Hi again.
I still can't get over this!
In my humble opinion, I think you are making abig mistake by writing this story with out checking your facts as far as I know them.
This is a very dangerous situation.
I am an Iranian who is inside the movement.
They are not. And they are causing damage. I have over 200 contacts on my phone for ppl in Iran; and that is not including my cousins, uncles, aunts, and other family.
I have contacts all over the country. Including Kurds, turks., and other ethnic groups as well.
I have over 900 contacts in Skype.
I traveled inside the country for almost two years.
I can show you videos & pictures.
You should not discount what I say because I wasn't caught or arrested.
In my opinion, Austinheap is a very dangerous person. And I can tell you this from personal experience.
Why don’t you try to talk with people inside iran and tell me if you can find one person who confirms hhe is doing anything other than passing out proxy servers which I can find with a google search.
But what is really killing me is that you published tehranweekly as a real source for info on twitter. That is the worse person you could have ever selected. Have you been watching their tweets.
I have slightly updated the blacklist page.
http://iran115.org/blacklist
But it still needs some work to communicate the numerous problems I found with this group.
Please consider what I am saying.
And if you think I am off base, please tell me why.
I would be happy to answer any questions or meet with anybody to prove my story.
Jamshid

"
The issue here is:
Who is Doug Gross getting his information from?
Why in the world would they use Tehranweekly as a trusted source? There are 100s of better choices.
Do they not read what this person posts on twitter? Who is their connection at CNN?
How do they know Austinheap?
"Here is a little something from the darker side of the web. I would like to tell you more on the phone, because it is rather disturbing. It is an ongoing problem I ran across when I started using twitter. http://iran115.org/blacklist"
This is exactly the point at which Gross lost all his interest. Ex-Act-Ly!
Combined with some of the stuff you wrote to him in your mails this was just like telling him "I am a crazy ass crackpot" directly. And guess what - when they're serious about their job and don't want to do an amusing story about crazy ass crackpots then reporters won't touch guys like you with a ten foot pole.
Not only is your blacklist crying "ccccrrrrrazyyyyy" to every reader, you even included links to places where people talk openly about you and the questions you never answered and your obvious lies and lies and lies...

I am curious as to why I have been placed on your black list? All I did was ask you some questions about something I was investigating.. I wasn't attacking you;I don't even know you. I was wanting to prove or disprove the claims. So I'm curious as to why you've gone to such extremes over one interview. If anything, to me, you have pretty much proven the claims to be accurate simply based on your actions. I now have my direction, and will investigating this further as a means of proving you to be a fraud rather than disproving the claims as I was originally trying to do. Not a great way to react to the media. I will also be making contacts with my associates at CNN and Fox in attempt to getting this investigation going with them as well.
I hope you can provide me with information as to why you have reacted in this manner.
The Raven sent a message using the contact form at http://iran115.org/contact.
I want to know why I'm on that blacklist. I have sent you one email already, and you have failed to respond. Is it because I asked you a simple question in hopes of figuring out where your organization stands as far as the accusations that were made? I have contacted my lawyer and he's informed me that I can take legal action as you have defaced who I am by placing me onto this list. I don't even know you, so rather or not you were guilty was something I wasn't going to assume, I was assuming you were innocent until you reacted the way you did.. Now you have three articles about you that indicate your guilt purely BASED ON YOUR ACTIONS toward me. My lawyer has seen the conversation we had and agrees that he's never seen an innocent man react the way you did.. I simply want to know why I'm on this list simply for doing my job. CNN is expected to make contact with me in the next few days to discuss this article... So if you wanted national attention... you just might get it.. but not what you were hoping for... So that gives you a few days to respond to my email and explain why you're reacting the way you are toward me.
Especially the part where you obviously don't understand any of the Farsi comments, even though you claim to actually be from Iran... LOL
Well, here is an interesting comment from a guy who I spoke with on the telephone. Originally, on his twitter account: he claimed to work with Department of Homeland Security. He actually called me from a number that was a DHS number. When i called it back, they had no such person there. Although I should say, I dont have his real name. Only Kevin Scott.
Keep in mind, caller ID spoofing is very easy these days. Kevin, all i can say is: I hope you are right about them just being a political party wiht differing views. I hope they are not agents for the regime pretending to be non-violent activists.
There is a new comment on the post "Iran: Ashura's Message "Iranians Are Not Punching Bags" (Josh Shahryar)".

Jamshid -
I have not communicated with you in a few months, but upon reading your comments here (and noting that I'm back on your Blacklist), would like to ive you my current thoughts. However, they really are just slightly updated versions of the same thoughts I gave you a few months back.
It's kind of strange finding you here, especially back in an extremely combative mode again. This is a blog that Josh contributes to. The founders oppose armed conflict when possible, and advocate co-operation between peoples and nations. It would possibly be described as leftie to moderate, if you had to classify it on a political spectrum. Nonwithstanding the gracious appearance of Ali Khamenei, the readership naturally tends to be somewhat in agreement. There are not many neocons here. If you want the "likeminded", you should be somewhere like this:
http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2009/12/iran-revolution-...
I personally am still deeply disspointed and saddened by your (IMHO overly paranoid) obsession with Josh and others who I'd best describe as being Iranian democracy supporters on the left to center of the international political spectrum. :( (Actually, a few people on your blacklist that I've come to know are US Republicans who simply believe in letting the Iranian Greens determine their own destiny) The fact that these people have tactical or strategic differences with you about similar goals seems to cause you to virtually equate them with Ahmadinejad and Khamenei! That is deeply unfortunate to me. I find myself wondering if you realize that you will actually need this type of people for your proposed democracy - they would form something akin to a "left-leaning" party while you would likely form the "right-leaning" party.
My important question is this. What happened to your apology letter to online #iranelection activists that you posted on your website? I was actually touched by it. In it, you seemed to miraculously realize a number of really important (and very true) things that would close the gap between you and most of the others. Indeed, some of these bulletpoints I had discussed with you, and all of them I completely agree with::
1) Virtually all the people you were attacking and blacklisting were fellow people who supported democracy and human rights.
2) Coming out of your harsh experiences in Iran, you have issues with trusting people, as well as paranoia. It was affecting your judgment about fellow people online as you tended to rapidly ascribe the worst possible motives to them (even if not evidence based.) .
3) The #iranelection people on Twitter are just people from dozens of countries who mostly did not know each other prior to the election, who are experiencing a common bond of unity & friendship based on giving support to the Iranian Green protesters:
4) Josh Shahryar, who like most people knew nobody at first, started out by being kind to people on Twitter, and asking what he could do for them? He then took the tweets that the people on #iranelection were sending, and used his journalistic skills to make a useful newsletter out of them. This kind of thing tends to make other people happy and appreciative and supportive..
5) You made mistakes early on Twitter that caused most of your problems there. You angered people initially and caused them to unite against you, by sending wild tweets and conducting psychological warfare against a number of #iranelection twitterers. (I personally got a number of these tweets before I even knew who you were!) You also started off on Twitter by immediately asking for money, thereby naturally raising suspicions of people.
6) After this, a vicious cycle occurred where you denounced more people on Twitter, and so those people and their new friends united and got more antagonistic towards you (a very common type of cycle which is not unlike the cycle in Iran where the regime beats more people, so the people unite and radicalize further, and then the regime gets harsher...)
7) You and Josh both have strong and incompatible personalities, and you've let a simple personality conflict escalate to areas of the extreme (and seemingly absurd to most observers.).
Oddly, I don't even find you and Josh to be all that ideologically far apart in some ways, except for the methodologies you advocate to oppose the current Iranian regime.. He's kind of a lefty-libertarian, and you are kind of a righty-libertarian. Perhaps the main difference between you and Josh, besides use of non-violence, is the same difference between you and the Twitterers, and the same difference between you and the authors of this EnduringAmerica blog. That is, you wish to have a specific pre-decided solution brought into Iran that was authored in the U.S. (albeit presumably by members of the Iranian diaspora). In your case is a constitution that supports democracy and separation of powers, etc. In the case of the other folks I just mentioned, they simply wish to give support the Greens in Iran, and then let the Greens work out the details of the (presumably much more democratic) government they set up or compromise on. I can see some tension there, but the lengths you have gone to make a huge deal and confrontation out of that seemingly small difference, especially with your Blacklist, is very saddening.
I'm not really sure why you retracted your apology and moved back to this hyper-controntational approach, but it is very dissapointing to me. I would think that you'd see that once an entire community of completely disparate people are all on your list, that it is more likely that your assessment of them is off, rather than that everyone except you is a spy.
Best, Kevin Scott

Interesting article: Someone actually phoned our "friend" @iran115 and got some bullshit directly from the man himself... lol
########### begin quote ####################
Today I spoke with iran115
Like many others I followed the twitter of iran115 for some time and today I decided to give him a phonecall.
I know it might not safe to leave pesronal infomation with him like telephone numbers, but I found a service on the internet that allows for anonym phonecalls, because actually they call the person you want to talk to and then call you and connect the two lines without forwarding your telephone number (*)
I have not recorded the conversation, so I can not give 1:1 protocol, but I try to give you the basic way the talk went. I will give some personal comments at the end of the text, marked by numbers.
We talked about 25 minutes, all the time the tone was a civilised one in my eyes.
------------
First you get a recorded message, welcoming you to the "Democratic Nation of Iran" and saying you can reach individual persons of that organisation if you call their individual numbers. (1)
Then I got connected to iran115.
He often tweeted that he can give proof for his tweets about having stayed in Iran and his claims on twitter if you call him, so I asked him for this proof.
He repeated what he said on twitter, that he has been in iran and that he has been building a organisation there for some years and all that. And that he does not trust several people there because they don't support his cause.
I said that this all I read on twitter already and that I called him because I was interested in something new, like the proof he promised.
Also I explained to him that I was calling over an anonym phone service, because I don't want to give him away my own number.
I asked him again for some proof for his story, because he tweeted he will provide it when you call him.
To that he replied that he already has send pictures and other material to one person at the BBC and that there will be something published there soon and he said that I could contact this person at the BBC to get that information.
Also he said that he has send some of the information to Nightowl (The Green Brief) but that he didn't publish it, and that prooves he can not be trusted. (2)
I asked him why he does not simply put this information on his own webpage instead and he said he not can do this, because there was some sensitive information there that could endanger the lives of people in Iran. Because he said on the pictures persons could be identified.
I said him that this seemed a strange reason, that it shoulld be no problem for him to make black squares over faces on the pictures and only show pictures where no places can be recognised that can endanger individuals.
Also I tried to explain to him that this all sounded really weird to me, because it was obvious many people do not believe his claims at all and that with some actual material like this he would be maybe taken much more serious.
He said "thank you for your feedback" and that he will take it into consideration. But something like making pictures anonym would be work and need time and that he was working on it.
So I asked him why this will take so long with a programm like photoshop or a free software like gimp it does not take months to make some black squares on some faces and when his page was on Drupal as he said on twitter it would need only five minutes to put it online?
I have a webpage myself running with Drupal (a content managing system) and putting new content online is really easy and quick.
Then he said he would take this into consideration. And he said again that I can contact that person at the BBC and that I can get confirmation for his story there.
and I asked why he sended it to a person he does not trust to publish it, Nightowl, instead of doing it himself, because if someone really is not trustworthy he could change the information and cause more danger this way. I tried to explain how strange this all sounds to an outsider like me and maybe other persons too.
I told to him how he would be more believable for me when he would have things backing up some of his claims on his page and if he could not understand this? But he said it was more important to him to warn people about haystack and other things on twitter. (3)
And he repeated that I can get confirmation for his story from that person on BBC if I want.
And he asked me if I trust haystack and I replied that I have not read something negative about it except his claims and that because I can not read and understand code and am no expert with proxys and things like that I have to trust people who seem to know this matters better than me.
He again thanked me about my input and that he would think about it and maybe take it into consideration. (4)
And he said that I was the first telephone call he received in all the time. (5)
---------
That was the conversation - maybe I got some points in the wrong order, later I thought it would have been good if I had recorded it all, so I could get everything exactly right.
My general view is that during the whole talk iran115 did not give me one reason to believe him more than I did believe before, it seems he only repeated things he twittered allready before and give strange answers when I asked for more things.
After the talk he was not on twitter for an hour or so (I didn't check my watch) and I thought maybe he was really preparing some pictures or so for his page, but when he came back he was just twittering really weird stuff about being the king of #iranelection and that people were not ready for democracy and so on - you have read it yourself maybe.
I think I not can say if he is a crackpot or a scammer or both or some kind of regime person from that conversation, but I definitely do not trust him, and he does damage to the whole topic on twitter with his nonsense and with causing other people to spend much time with him.
-----------
Comments on the talk:
(1) it's hard to say of there are more than one person there, because only that one number was ever published
(2) this to me seemed really strange, because it was as if he sended this material to Nightowl for him to publish it, but he could not publish it himself because it would be dangerous to iranian people?
(3) this is more weird for me, because he sais he wants to help democracy in iran, but he does nothing else, no informations about what is happening in the streets in iran, nothing about the lies of the regime and things like that. and he twitters that the green movement is allmost dead and that people don't need proxys, only when they are under high surveilance risk? This seems to me to be really dangerous and against allmost everything I have read about what I have read in all kinds of places?
(4) In the whole conversation he always said "I" and "me" and so on, never "we" or "us", so if there is there a real organisation in several countries with offices like it sais on his page why does he not have to talk about this with other members of the organisation and only has to think about everything himself?
(5) if this is true this is a good thing, when people don't call him I beleive that no one sent him money too.
(*) This is a german webpage, they own an international flatrate and use it to earn money from advertising you "have" to watch on the browser while you speak on the phone. I don't want to spam, but if someone is interested I will happyly post the link here and some instructions in english (the service is web-based, but the page is in germany and the language is german)
go green - Hans
############### end quote #################
This is too cute - he claims he has got material that can prove his stories, but he just can't be bothered with actually putting it on this page, because ... well, I guess he's busy 24/7 begging for money and spreading lies on twitter. Also the pictures he *could* provide would endanger people in Iran. BUT he sent them to Nightowl to publish them.
Yes, you got that right: He sent sensitive material that could lead to the imprisonment, torture and death of people in Iran to a person who he claims to be an Iranian government spy.
Reality comedy at it's best...
You claim in the conversation Hans was your very first caller, yet you talked to several people on the phone before?
Lies after lies after lies.
